Canadian PM Candidate Wants Citizens To Use Bitcoin As Money

We have been continuing to bring you news stories of people in highly influential positions openly embracing crypto projects. In Canada, the conservative candidate for prime minister has brought forward his beliefs that the citizens of Canada should be permitted to use Bitcoin and other crypto-assets as a substitute for traditional fiat.

Pierre Poilierve feels that Canadians should now have the right to use Bitcoin as legal tender in their country. Youtube channel BITCOIN uploaded a video on March 29th where the conservative party candidate stated that the people of Canada need more financial freedom. He was making this speech to a crowd of approximately 100 people at a local restaurant.

“That includes freedom to own and use crypto, tokens, smart contracts, and decentralized finance.”

“People should have the freedom to choose other money. If the government is going to abuse our cash, we should have the freedom to use other, higher quality cash.”

You might be able to recall that earlier this year, the Canadian government decided to take a hard approach toward crypto. This was in response to the freedom Convoy protests that occurred in Ontario. This was highly controversial as in January and February this year, Canadian officials froze the bank accounts of protesters and made attempts to block all donations coming their way, even ones made in crypto.

Koleya Karringten, The Executive Director of the Canadian Blockchain Consortium (CBC) was approached by Cointelegraph today to talk about these recent comments made. He believes that this reaction has created a hostile environment from the Liberal government towards crypto. He thinks that this is due to a lack of knowledge, understanding, and regulatory clarity.

“It’s important to have a strong advocacy position to educate the government on blockchain. Once they see the level of tax revenue, they will know this isn’t an industry for criminals, it’s an industry for innovation.”
